Leonard Lee Mathis

Mr. Leonard Lee Mathis, age 89 of Oakdale, went to be with The Lord Monday September 15, 2014 at his home surrounded by his wife and family. He was born on January 29, 1925 to Luther and Thelma Mathis. He proudly joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and honorably served his country for 24 years. Leonard attended Crab Orchard Baptist Church for 40 years serving as a Sunday school director, teacher, trustee, and choir director. He greeted everyone with a smile and a stick of chewing gum. He will be remembered as a man who loved and served his God, family, and country. 

He was preceded in death by his parents: Luther and Thelma Mathis 
One brother: Rev. Ralph Mathis 
And six children. 

He is survived by his wife of 64 years: Margaret Elizabeth Clarke Mathis 
Two sons and daughters-in-law: David and Teri Ann Mathis and Steve and Cindy Mathis 
Three daughters and sons-in-law: Kathy and Terry Bingham, Deborah and Donald Mckinney, and Linda and Jay Eble 
One daughter-in-law: Barbara Mathis 
One sister: June and Bobby Hutcherson 
Two brothers: Paul and Norma Mathis and Larry and Peggy Mathis 
One sister-in-law: Jackie Mathis 
He was a loving and engaged papaw to 6 grandsons and 7 granddaughters. Although failing in health, he was also a loving papaw to 16 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. 

The family will receive friends Wednesday September 17, 2014 from 11 AM to 12 PM at Crab Orchard Baptist Church in Oakdale with Rev. Glen Smith officiating the funeral service at Noon. The Interment will follow the funeral service in the Crab Orchard Cemetery with full military honors given by the United States Navy and Brannon - Kries American Legional Post 149 of Morgan County. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Big Emory Baptist Benevolence Fund at 1607 Webster Rd. Harriman, TN 37748.
